Physically it is only possible to get pregnant around ovulation. Sperm can live in your body for up to 5 days, but typically only live about 2-3 days. If there are sperm in your body when the egg is released, then pregnancy is possible. The reason some people report getting pregnant during period, or right around it, is that they ovulated early or late. Although ovulation typically occurs around mid-cycle, or day 14, cycles vary widely between women and few have a textbook cycle. Using an ovulation kit is a good way to determine when you are ovulating in your cycle. I usually ovulate around day 11 or 12, so if I waited until 14 like common advice, then I would miss my window.
